Washington Health Benefit Exchange statement on passage of federal bill affecting health coverage for thousands of Washingtonians

OLYMPIA, Wash. – Washington Health Benefit Exchange CEO Ingrid Ulrey issued a statement today as the U.S. House passed the “Big Beautiful Bill” and sent it to the president’s desk.

“It is deeply upsetting that Congress has passed a bill that will have devastating effects on the health and well-being of Washingtonians. The cumulative effects of cuts to Medicaid and unnecessary and burdensome changes to Affordable Care Act plans will hurt our entire health care system and result in thousands of people in our state losing coverage.

“At a time when we’ve made substantial progress on reducing the uninsured rate in our state, the changes in the bill will impact the availability and affordability of health coverage, making Washingtonians sicker, will make our health care delivery system weaker and create ripple effects that will be felt for decades.

“We applaud those in our state’s Congressional delegation who rejected the bill and tried to preserve vital health care access for their constituents and Americans across the country.

“While we are very disappointed as this bill will result in fewer people covered and higher prices, we are also watching carefully the next decision point before Congress. They must decide whether or not to extend the enhanced premium tax credits, which have been crucial to stabilizing customer premiums.

“Washington Health Benefit Exchange is ready to face these challenges, and we remain deeply committed to our mission to radically improve the way Washingtonians secure health coverage. Our work continues and we are preparing for open enrollment which starts on Nov. 1."
